DIY: Burberry Prorsum Bow Belt Tutorial

Éste es mi primer Do-It-Yourself y espero les guste: Les mostraré cómo hacer el hermoso cinturón de moño de la colección de otoño 2012 de Burberry Prorsum.
Todo empezó cuando vi el desfile en livestream y con el primer look me quedé prendada, pues tenía algunas de las cosas que más me gustan: una gabardina, color mostaza, falda a la rodilla y un cinturón.

This is my very first Do-It-Yourself and I hope you like it: I'll show how to do the wonderful bow belt from the autumn 2012 Burberry Prorsum collection.
Everything started when I watched the livestream and with the first look I was hooked, it had some of the things I love the most: a trench, mustard, knee length skirt and a belt.

El mismo cinturón se repitió durante todo el desfile y ésto sólo me hizo quererlo y que me gustara más y más. Y seamos sinceros, no voy a tener libras extra para comprarlo (si las tuviera totalmente lo haría), así que decidí hacerlo yo misma. Y ustedes pueden hacerlo conmigo.

This very same belt was repeated over the collection and it made me love it and want it more and more. And let's be real, I will not have some extra pounds to buy it (if I had I totally would), so I decided I'd do it. And you can do it with me.

Así que empecemos: Los cinturones de Burberry eran de dos materiales, piel o terciopelo. Como es un poco difícil coser cualquiera de los dos (confíen en mí, no quieren intentarlo si no son expertos) decidí no escoger ninguno de los dos. He aquí la lista de materiales a usar:

• Al rededor de 50 cm (20") de tafeta de seda. Puedes comprar tafeta de poliéster también. Yo compré la mía en color mostaza en Euforia Fashion (aquí el mapa de Google). La tafeta es muy fácil de coser y luce muy bien.
• Elástico de 2" (5cm) de ancho.
• 1 broche de gancho grande.
• Aguja e hilo.
• Máquina de coser (esto es opcional).
• Esto no es un material, pero recuerda dar clic a las imágenes para verlas más grandes.

So, let's start: The ones from Burberry were in two materials, leather or velvet. Since it'd be hard to sew any of them (trust me, you don't wanna try it if you're not an expert) I chose neither of them. Here what you will need for the belt:

• About 20" (50cm) of silk taffeta. You can buy a polyester taffeta too. I bought mine in mustard colour at Euforia Fashion (here the google map). The taffeta is easy to sew and looks awesome.
• 2" (5cm) wide elastic.
• 1 big pair of hook and eye.
• Thread and needle.
• Sewing machine (this is optional).
• This is not a material, but remember to clic the images for bigger.

1. Mide tu cintura y corta el elástico 5cm (2") más chico. Si quieres usar tu cinturón sobre una prenda exterior mide tu cintura ENCIMA de un saco o trench. Ahora doble la tela a la mitad por lo ancho y dibuja una línea a 3/8" de la orilla, luego una paralela a 4" y otra más a 3/8". Esta va a ser la tela para el cinturón. Ahora dibuja dos rectángulos (sobre la tela aún doblada): uno de 4" x 4 3/4" y otro de 3" x 4 3/4". Corta las piezas.

1. Measure your waist and cut the elastic about 2" (5cm) smaller. If you wanna wear your belt over outwear, measure your waist OVER a jacket or trench. Now, fold the fabric by the half over the width and draw a line 3/8" from the edge, then a paralel at 4" and another at 3/8". This is gonna be your belt fabric. Now draw two squares (still with the folded fabric): one of 4" x 4 3/4" and another of 3" x 4 3/4". Cut this pieces.

2. Cose (a mano o a máquina) los rectángulos a 3/8" de la orilla dejando en el centro un pequeño espacio sin puntadas como en la foto. Esto es importante porque vas a voltear las piezas por ese hoyito. Corta las esquinas.

2. Sew (by hand or on the sewing machine) the rectangles at 3/8" from the edge leaving at the center a little space without stitches like in the photo. This is important since you'll turn inside out the pieces through that little hole. Cut the corners.

3. Dobla la pieza del cinturón a la mitad a lo largo y cose a 3/8". NO cosas los extremos de los lados.

3. Fold the belt piece by the length half and sew at 3/8". DO NOT sew either of the finishing sides.

4. Voltea todas las piezas y plánchalas. Cierra el hoyito de los rectángulos a mano.

4. Turn inside out the pieces and iron them. Close the little holes of the squares by hand.

5. Acomoda el rectángulo pequeño encima del más grande y marca sobre la orilla la mitad y luego los cuartos. Ahora dobla estas tablitas y fíjalas con un par de puntadas.

5. Put the small square over the bigger one and put a mark on the edge's half and another on the quarters. Then fold this little pleats and stitch the three of them.

6. Ahora ya tienes el moño. Genial, ¿no?

6. Now you've got the bow. Isn't it awesome?

7. El siguiente paso es meter el elástico en la tira del cinturón. La tira se empezará a fruncir. Fija el elástico con un alfiler en la orilla de la tira y mide 3" desde ahí para poner otro alfiler a esa distancia SIN ningún frunce. Haz esto en ambas orillas y pasa una costura sobre ambas líneas como en la foto.

7. The next step is putting the elastic inside the belt strap. The strap will star to get gathered. Pin the elastic at the edge of the strap and from there measure 3" and pin there too WITHOUT any ruffle. This will be done at both sides and the sew both lines as in the photo.

8. Fija con alfileres la mitad del moño y cose unas puntadas entre cada tabla como en la foto. Cose una puntada mas a 3/4" de la orilla por la parte de atrás del moño para fijar el moño y la tira del cinturón (ésto supuestamente debe ser invisible o al menor muy discreto). Esta puntada se hace a 3/4" en las orillas superior e inferior del moño.

8. Pin the half bow over the belt strap and sew a stitch between each pleat it as in photo. Sew one more stich at 3/4" from the edge at the back of the bow to fix the bow and the strap (this is suposed to be invisible or at least very discrete). This stich is done at 3/4" from the top and bottom edges of the bow.

9. Dios mío, ¿acaso es este mi post más largo EVER? Bueno, seguramente lo es. PERO tu cinturón está casi terminado. Ahora sólo necesitas coser el broche a la mitad de cada orilla del cinturón. El mío es uno vintage que me dio mi mamá porque (la cito) "se ve bonito sobre el amarillo". Y sí que se ve bonito.

9. God! Is this my longest post EVER?! Well, I'm sure it is. BUT your belt is almost done! Now you only need to sew the hook and eye at center of each edge of the belt. Mine is a vintage one my mom gave me 'cause (I quote her) "it looks nice on yellow". And it certainly does.

10. Ahora puedes usar tu totalmente increíble cinturón nuevo encima de cualquier cosa y disminuir un poco la depresión porque no podremos comprar el de Burberry. ¿Pero qué importa?
A mí me gusta usar el mío sobre mi trench (que TAMPOCO es Burberry. Oh ya viene la depresión de nuevo).
O tal vez no.

10. Now wear your totally awesome new belt over your favorite clothes and get a little less depressed 'cause we won't be able to buy the real Burberry one. But who cares?
I like mine over my trench (that ALSO is not Burberry. Oh depression here I go).
