Vulture

Esperen, no sólo nuevas versiones si no versiones acústicas.

Everyone knows I'm such a Patrick Wolf fan-from-hell. Well, he just got a new album of old songs in new versions. Wait, not only new versions, but acoustic versions. And it is SO beautiful!
Lately I've been thinking about buying a tablet for digital illustration, so I'm testing one right now and, you know what? It's ADDICTIVE! Now I can't stop! And just mix my Patrick Wolf obsession with the new album and a tablet... you get a digital illustration.
I'm thinking about drawing an illustration for each track in this album. This is track #4 "Vulture". Here I leave you with the original version and clic HERE for buying the album in iTunes.
Listen to the full album and tell me: do you think it is as perfect as I think so?

Joshua Bell is kind of a rockstar

"Joshua Bell is kind of a rockstar"
design markers on Hahnemüle sketchbook

Young classical power, people.

Last Sunday I went to the first OSN (National Symphonic Orchestra) concert of this season, they played some Bernstein, some Copland, Bruch's violin concert no. 1 and Ravel's Tzigane for violin and orchestra. For the last part they needed an awesome violin player, and they invited Joshua Bell. Just like that. Joshua fuckin' Bell (pardon my french).
The boy is like a rockstar. A lot like a rockstar, actually. He sounds wonderful and makes all these movements that only a violin player might understand (let's face it, we normal people will never get it, may be not even the violinists get it) just like he is about to headbang at any moment. Like the Apocalyptica guys. That kind of movements.
After the concert ended I got obsessed by the rockstarity (yeah, I am making up words) of the classical musicians and the odd and eccentric look they might have on stage: you know, like Lang Lang or Hahn Bin (Ithink Hahn Bin needs his own full post in the future).
Young classical power, people.
Let's shake our fists with angst and praise actual artists.

K-Pop for my Friends

Listening to my iPod I found out that there's a lot of korean music I like and that many of my friends might also like a lot. A LOT. Even though their brains might melt, I'm sure they'll enjoy it. And if they don't, they should pretend.
Anyway, I though it'd be a good idea to make a single k-music suggestion according to my blogger friends' style and then look if my theory is correct while this turns into some kind of blogroll. Let's start.
WAIT there's a warning: all this music might or might not melt your brain and then you wont stop singing-dancing-clapping. Yes, all that is a very long word.

Missing Pieces

"Missing pieces" or "They take a part of you with them"
Fine Sharpie on bond paper and digital colour.

"Sometimes someone control everything about you
and when they tell you that they just can't live without you
they ain't lyin', they'll take pieces of you
and they'll stang above you and walk away
that's right, and take a part of you with them."

Like a religious fanatic as soon as the new Jack White solo album "Blunderbuss" was available I ran to the music store and bought it. Yes, not iTunes music, but music with a physical beautiful booklet with black and blue photos of super pale Jack who doesn't know that sunlight is for free.
"Missing Pieces" is the first track and since the beginning of the organ melody I loved it (even though it is not my very-most-ultra-super-favourite track), I mean just check the lyric:

"Sometimes someone control everything about you
and when they tell you that they just can't live without you
they ain't lyin', they'll take pieces of you
and they'll stang above you and walk away
that's right, and take a part of you with them."

Creepy, uh? Well, truth is sometimes creepy. And even when it comes in the form of the odd high voice of Jack White.

If you wanna watch an awesome live recorded session with Jack White, just check out the one he did with AMEX directed by Gary Oldman.
You can also buy the album on iTunes or Amazon if you're sick of me showing off the awesomeness of it.

Last Sunday was the last performance of the Strauss opera "Die Frau Ohne Schatten" (The woman without shadow) at the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Palace) here in Mexico City.
I've been SO tired since the rehearsals and then the only 4 performances that I have the strangest sensation for this last performance. Something like feeling sad 'cause now it's over, but also happy 'cause I'll be able to sleep again (performance ending at 11 p.m. on tuesday is not so cool, you know?).

Stop me oh oh oh Stop me...

Hoy en la mañana desperté y mi primer pensamiento fue "Nothing's changed I still love you... Only slightly less than I used to, my love" y he estado cantando todo el día esta canción de The Smiths.
Who said I lied? Because I never!

I woke up this morning and the very first thought was "Nothing's changed I still love you... Only slightly less than I used to, my love" and I have been singing this The Smiths song ever since. All day. All day listening in my mind this song that put a smile on my face with its irony.
It's serious, but, do you know something? Who said I lied? Because I never!

"Stop me if you think that you've heard this one before"

Death in Venice

"Death in Venice"
Sharpie on bond paper.

No sé...

I LOVE Death in Venice: the novel, the movie, the ballet, the Jean Paul Gaultier menswear collection... I just love the entire history and even the main character inner fight between the Apollonian and Dionysian. And I also love Britten's music. So I obviously LOVE the Death in Venice opera.

Last week 3 of my friends and I went to the Fine Arts Palace to the performance by the Opera de Bellas Artes. I had already seen this production about 2 years ago and I was a little disappointed to realize that this was exactly the same production with the same singers, great singers, but I always expect for better versions. Anyway this opera is just awesome, and all the main characters were marvelous. All of them.

But let me tell you a little bit about this opera: it is based in the Thomas Mann 1912 "Der tod in Venedig" novel, which was inspired by a polish boy Mann saw in a visit to Venice, the sudden love of Goethe by an 18-year-old Baroness and the death of Gustav Mahler in may 1911. The story is about a famous old writer who tired of Viena goes on vacation to Venice and there he finds the inspiration, obsession and love in the form of a sensual polish boy (almost a child) called Tadzio. (Do you wanna know more? Then READ THE BOOK my friends).

The opera is a wonderful adaptation of the novella not only meaning that the story is entirely there, but the spirit of the book is there. My favorite part of this? Well, that in this opera the character of the boy is not a singer but a dancer. Isn't is brilliant? The most important character in the opera does not sing, he dances expressing all the sensuality of Tadzio with his own body. That's genial.

In this production I have to say that the dancer who portrays Tadzio (Ignacio Pereda) was not my favorite; yes, he was great and has a body like a greek sculpture, but I think that he should be a skinier younger-looking dancer like a boy-barely-a-teenager (yeah I know that sounded quite weird). But this guy danced like hell. Great. The tenor Ted Schmitz has a lovely voice and with his tall skinny body looked really aristocratic and decadent like Gustav von Aschenbach. Santiago Cumplido, the countertenor  who was the voice of Apollo... ok I have no words for this guy... he's so... so... perfect is the word? I don't know... His voice is wonderful, magical... how do I explain this? OK his voice is as he ate a 12-year-old boy. Yes, he sounds like a boy, and being his melodies SO Britten (which reminded me of "That Yönge child" from the Ceremony of Carols) this childish voice is beyond perfect. But do you know what? All the opera stands over the baritone who is the voice of Dionysos and every character who inspires any act of Dionysian pleasure to Aschenbach, he is the thread that makes the story go on and Armando Gama was just astonishing, perfect, flexible and with his red shoes makes all the opera go smooth and charming.
And the production! The scenery! All that water and the background moving for going in and out of stage and the fact that Aschenbach NEVER goes out of stage is just wonderful. I think that the success of this performance is half the bass and half the scenery, they are the ones who tell the history.

Well, I have finally sung the praises to one of my favorite operas EVER, but have you ever seen it? Did you like it? What about the book, the movie or the ballet? Come on, let me know! (I recommend look for the later in YouTube, there are brilliant performances: look at THIS opera production by the Barcelona Gran Teatre del Liceu Liceu and THIS from the Hamburg Ballet).

Happy Birthday Wolfie

"Happy Birthday Wolfie"
colour pencils on bond paper

Today's is Mozart's birthday (Wolfie, if you're his friend). Born in 1756 he was (and still is) the ultimate wünderkind, a music genius. How many times have your music teachers talked to you about him? Millions. As a child, I loved Wolfie's music 'cause it was so fun and he was a kid just like me (but with a wig and more talented). Actually is kind of odd when I go to the opera and they perform some Mozart, usually I sit next to a pearl-neckalce-old-lady-who-sits-all-rigid-on-her-seat and she watches the performace with such seriousness while I laugh as if it was a sticom. Dear old-lady-with-pearls: Wolfie was everything but serious! He didn't even wear a wig while everyone else did (apparently he thought his hair was too pretty for hiding it under a wig). Really, in a concert I always think "why are you SO serious?". You know, we all should enjoy more and taking ourselves ina a less serious way. Just like Wolfie. And hi super-extra-long birth name.
Finally I leave you en existencial and deep quote by Wolfie:

“Our riches, being in our brains, die with us... Unless of course someone chops off our head, in which case, we won't need them anyway.”

Ah, y QUIERO ese look.

Melting my Brain

I'm about to tell you the ultimate truth of the universe. Are you ready? Here I go:
Korean pop melts your brain.
And if the song's chorus is in english, it has claps and a sticky melody, you are doomed. Lost. Forever. Your brain is melted now. Be careful not to nod your head, 'cause your brain will dran through your ears and nose. (Yes, I know I'm the worst). The point is you'll be sticked to that korean pop song even if you don't understand a thing. You'll love it.
It's inevitable.
And it gets worse.
Because there's also dancing. Oh God, the choreography is absolute ruin.
Then, when you sing, clap and dance you are lost. Completely lost.
Yes, I'm a big fan.
I love K-pop.
Even when I don't understand why are the boybands still popular in Korea.
I guess it's the claps in the songs.
Or the amazing styling of each member of each band. (It's true! They ALWAYS look so stylish!)
But since I'm an evil person, I leave you this song and after you listen to it you'll be a fan too (Yes, I know, I'm the worst! It's like sharing an addiction).

"Love"

I'm just gonna finish this saying:
Love, love, love, everybody clap clap clap! I want you back to meeeeeee...
....
Yes, I'm lost.

Pianist Francois-Joel Thiollie.

Y me emocioné.

Save the Date: Vogue Fashion's Night Out

¿Qué van a hacer ustedes esa noche?

"May be it's the Chemistry" or "George Craig at the FNO London"
black fineliner, black sharpie, gold ink, design markers
jacket and shirt from Burberry Prorsum.

You should know I love the concept behind the Vogue's Fashion's Night Out. I mean, why not? It's a marvelous project for the reactivation of the fashion industry reminding the costumer that shopping is an experience. And I could tell you all about it or you could read it here. :) Haha, not an easy post today, huh? (come on! don't be lazy and clic clic CLIC).
Well.
This is gonna be the first FNO in Mexico City, there will be cocktails and DJs at the Inditex stores, fashion shoots and photobooths at departamental stores, vintage Vogue covers exhibitions at malls, Vogue's fashion editor's choices at the departamental stores, special items form some brands... long list, isn't it?
What are you gonna do that night? I don't know yet, not because I don't a plan, but because I'm so expectant for the events the brands are gonna throw. I mean other years all around the world there have been all kinds of activities, since parties hosted by Burberry (people say that they always throw the best parties) to watch "Breakfast at Tiffany's" at the Carolina Herrera store.
My plan is this (and of course you can join me if you want): I'll ride my bike to Masaryk and check out every store I find with enough people interesting and after that I'll go to Antara. And here is the fun part: You MUST be wearing your very best and personal look because the will be Vogue photographers and I'll be checking on you and I'll take photos and give my card to my favorite ones 'cause I'll draw your looks and the very best one will have his/her original drawing. (I NEVER give my originals so this is a big thing, huh?).
Finally I leave you with a video (and an illustration) from last year's FNO in London: it's George Craig from One Night Only wearing (obviously) Burberry as he sings "Chemistry" (loooooove this song) and walks to the store.
Anyway, the question is: What will happen on September the 8th? I don't know, but it shall be fun.
