Fashion Dictionary: Brogues

Seguido escucho (¡y leo!) a gente llamar a las cosas por nombres incorrectos. Pensando en esto decidí dibujar algunos artículos con sus apropiados nombres: prendas, zapatos, accesorios y explicar su función y por qué son llamados de una u otra manera. Por supuesto, esto no es para el experto en moda (quien en teoría ya sabe todo esto) si no para la gente común como yo que quiere saber la diferencia entre un mac y un trench o entre un boston y un derby.
Empecemos hoy con un zapato: EL BROGUE

Often I hear (and read!) people call things with the wrong names. Thinking about this I decided to draw a few articles with the proper name of garments, shoes and accessories and explain their function and why are called this or that way. Of course this is not for an expert (who in theory already knows all this) but for any commoner as myself who wants to know the diference between a mac and a trench or a boston and a derby.
Let's start with a shoe: THE BROGUE.

Raf Simons es como un dios. Él es el dios creador de el nuevo look y fit para caballero, ese fit que evolucionó del que el anterior dios-del-menswear Hedi Slimane creó en sus días en Dior Homme.

Flower Power! NOT only for girls

¿Quién dice que las flores son sólo para niñas? Bueno, de hecho SON bastante femeninas pero también hay flores de hombre (ni siquiera estoy segura de que esto esté teniendo sentido), y esos estampados florales son CLAVE en esta temporada, así que no pretendan que no se los advertí dandies.
Esta tendencia es totalmente sobre el tipo de estampado que uses: porque NO es lo mismo usar una camisa hawaiiana sacada de Miami Vice que unos tenis de flores en miniprint o una corbata con flores ridículamente grandes. De hecho es un asunto bastante delicado. ¡Pero deja de correr en círculos como muppet! Aquí vamos a ver las claves para usar esta tendencia y no morir en el intento.

Who says flowers are only for girls? Well, they actually ARE pretty femenine, but there also are men's flowers (I'm not even sure that makes any sense), and those floral prints are a KEY PRINT this season, so you cannot pretend I didn't tell you this my dear dandies.
This trend is all about the kind of print you'll wear: it is NOT the same wearing a Miami Vice hawaiian shirt than floral miniprint sneakers or a ridiculous tie with huge flowers. It certeinly is a delicate matter. But stop running in circles like a muppet! Here I give you the keys for enjoy wearing the floral trend and not die trying.

¿Se acuerdan de cuando Marc Jacobs era feo, gordito y bastante teto? ¿De aquellos tiempos en que en Louis Vuitton le pedían usar zapatos en lugar de tenis? ¿De cuando él usaba lentes de aumento enormes antes de que eso fuera cool?
¿No se acuerdan? Bueno, entonces no saben que Marc no siempre fue el guapo sabroso que es ahora o seguro tienen como 13 años.
De repente me siento vieja. Como en la mañana que escuché que el Elephant de The White Stripes tiene 10 años que salió. Depresión total. Pero eso es como para otro post.

You do not? Well, then you don't know that he wasn't always the handsome man he is now or you deffinitely you are about 13 years old.
Suddenly I feel old. Like this morning when I heard that the Elephant by The White Stripes is now 10 years old. Total depression. But that is for another post.

It's wedding season

Justo como en Wedding Crashers aparentemente es temporada de bodas: algunos de mis amigos se van a casar así como uno de mis más cercanos primos. Para él hice este dibujo de él y su novia para la invitación de la boda; ambos son bastante jóvenes y pensé en ellos para mi dibujo en colores frescos, actitud relajada y un ligero sentido del humos: él tiene el ramo y ella nos enseña sus zapatos rosas.

Just like in Wedding Crashers apparently is wedding season: some of my friends are getting married and also one of my dearest cousins is. So for him I made this drawing of him and his bride for their wedding invitation; they are pretty young and I thought about them for my drawing in fresh colours, a relaxed attitude and a light sense of humour: he holding the flowers, she showing her pink shoes.

Sí, ya sé. Hoy es San Valentín y es TAN no lo mío. Hoy todo es como la canción de CNBlue y toda esa onda, pero hasta les tengo preparadas 2 entradas para hoy (sí, aunque usted no lo crea).

Aquí está la primera inspirada en 2 de mis amigos tomándose de la mano y queriéndose TANTO que es imposible no quererlos a ambos <3 Ellos son el dúo detrás de Pandora y esta ilustración en acuarela me quedó tan linda que hasta la enmarqué. Perdónenme mi falta de habilidad para las fotos.

Here is the first one inspired by 2 of my dearest friends holding hands and loving each other SO fuckin' much that it's impossible not love them back. They are the Pandora design duo and this aquarelle illustration is SO cute that I even framed it. I'm sorry for my shitty photo skills.

Elle México Diseña, here I go

Justo ahora estoy en el largo, complicado y cansado proceso se hace un vestido de alta costura para el concurso de diseño más importante en México: Elle México Diseña (EMD). Hace algunos años fui finalista de este mismo concurso (con este vestido) y este año realmente me llegó la inspiración, así que ahora estoy haciendo el vestido. A mano. Todo a mano. Hasta lo voy a rebordar. Como couture de verdad. Sí, estoy un poco loca. Pero quedará hermoso. Así que esperen porque no publicaré mucho este mes por la total falta de tiempo que se aproxima. Pero les dejo la ilustración del vestido. (Sí, estoy posteándolo aquí y si alguien en algún lugar hace un vestido como este y lo llama como suyo, totalmente lo voy a seguir y patearé su cara por robar mi vestido. Lo aviso.)

Right now I am in the long, complicated and tiresome process of making a couture dress for the most important fashion design contest in Mexico: Elle Mexico Diseña (EMD). A few years ago I was finalist in this same contest (with this dress) and this year I really got the inspiration so I'm now making the dress. By hand. All of it. I'll even embroider it. Like actual couture. Yes, I know I'm kind of crazy. But it will be beautiful. So wait for it since I will not be blogging much this month for the absolute lack of time that is coming. But I leave you the illustration of the dress. (Yes, I am posting it here and if someone somewhere makes a dress like this and call it his/her own I will totally follow you and kick your face for stealing my dress. Just saying).

The Nutcracker X-Mas

Ya sé que no he publicado nada desde hace cientos de años, pero aquí estoy de vuelta. Mucho más cansada de lo que se imaginan, después de cantar la larguísima temporada navideña de la OSM y ahora en la mitad de los conciertos de navidad del coro Y en mi trabajo de Godínez Y he estado dibujando. Suena como si you fuera una trabajadora muy comunista.
Como sea, durante esos conciertos la orquesta tocaba 3 números de la suite de El Cascanueces de Tchaikovsky y aunque éste está LEJOS de se uno de mis ballets favoritos la música definitivamente sí es de mis preferidas. Así que he estado pensando en el ballet y en todos esos personajes que bailan solo una pieza, y en los pocos que aparecen en todo el ballet y (por supuesto) en los maravillosos looks y vestuarios que cada año se crean para las diferentes compañías que lo bailan.
Y pus claro que hice algunas ilustraciones. Pero no solo eso. Como es época navideña y todo mundo quiere dar regalos pues pensé en que debería darles un pequeño regalito a ustedes queridos lectores: las ilustraciones de El Cascanueces son tarjetas descargables para que las puedan imprimir y dárselas a quien quieran GRATIS. I know I haven't posted like in a hundred years, but here I am! More tired than you can imagine, after singing the super long Christmas season of the OSM and now in the middle of the choir's own x-mas concerts AND at my job AND I've been drawing. It sounds like I'm some sort of communist hardworker.
Anyway, during this concerts the orchestra played 3 numbers from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker suite, and even if it is FAR from being my favourite ballet the music definitely is one of my favourite ones. So, I've been thinking about the ballet and all those characters that dance only one piece, the few that appear during the whole ballet and (of course!) about the marvellous looks and costumes that every year are created for the many companies that dance it.
And of course I made a few illustrations. But not only that. Since it's Christmas time and everyone wanna give presents  I though that you all dear readers should have a nice little present: The Nutcracker illustrations are downloadable cards for you to print them and give them this season to anyone you want for FREE! Todo mundo sabe que soy fanática-del-infierno de Patrick Wolf. Bueno, dejen les digo que tiene un disco nuevo de canciones viejas en versiones nuevas. Esperen, no sólo nuevas versiones si no versiones acústicas. Y está TAN bonito.
Últimamente he estado pensando en comprar una tableta para ilustración digital, así que estoy probando una y ¿saben qué? ¡Esto es ADICTIVO! ¡Ahora ya no puedo detenerme! Y bueno, mezclen mi obsesión con Patrick Wolf, su disco nuevo y una tableta... y bueno, obtienen una ilustración digital.
Creo que debería hacer una ilustración de cada track. Éste es el track #4 "Vulture". Les dejo la versión original de la canción y del click AQUÍ para comprar el disco en iTunes.

Everyone knows I'm such a Patrick Wolf fan-from-hell. Well, he just got a new album of old songs in new versions. Wait, not only new versions, but acoustic versions. And it is SO beautiful!
Lately I've been thinking about buying a tablet for digital illustration, so I'm testing one right now and, you know what? It's ADDICTIVE! Now I can't stop! And just mix my Patrick Wolf obsession with the new album and a tablet... you get a digital illustration.

El domingo pasado fui al primer concierto de la OSN (Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional) de esta temporada, tocaron un poco de Bernstein, un poco de Coplant, el covierto para violín no. 1 de Bruch y la Tzingane para violín y orquesta de Ravel. Para esta última parte del concierto necesitaban un increíble violinista, así que invitaron a Joshua Bell. Joshua-no-mames-Bell (disculpen ustedes mi francés).
El muchacho es como un rockstar. Bastante como un rockstar de hecho. Tiene un sonido increíble y hace todos estos movimientos raros al tocar que sólo un violinista entendería (aceptémoslo, nosotros la gente normal nunca le entenderemos a eso, aunque tal vez tampoco los violinistas lo hagan), esos movimientos que hacen que parezca que en cualquier momento empezará a headbanguear. Como los de Apocalyptica. Ese tipo de movimientos.
Después del concierto me empecé a obsesionar por la rockstariedad (sí, estoy inventando palabras) de los músicos clásicos y raros y excéntricos que pueden lucir sobre el escenario: ya saben, como Lang Lang o Hahn Bin (creo Hahn Bin necesita su propio post entero en el futuro).

Agitemos nuestros puños con furia y disfrutemos de verdaderos artistas.

Last Sunday I went to the first OSN (National Symphonic Orchestra) concert of this season, they played some Bernstein, some Copland, Bruch's violin concert no. 1 and Ravel's Tzigane for violin and orchestra. For the last part they needed an awesome violin player, and they invited Joshua Bell. Just like that. Joshua fuckin' Bell (pardon my french).
The boy is like a rockstar. A lot like a rockstar, actually. He sounds wonderful and makes all these movements that only a violin player might understand (let's face it, we normal people will never get it, may be not even the violinists get it) just like he is about to headbang at any moment. Like the Apocalyptica guys. That kind of movements.
After the concert ended I got obsessed by the rockstarity (yeah, I am making up words) of the classical musicians and the odd and eccentric look they might have on stage: you know, like Lang Lang or Hahn Bin (Ithink Hahn Bin needs his own full post in the future).
Young classical power, people.
Let's shake our fists with angst and praise actual artists.

El fin de semana pasado andaba de compras y vi a esta chica con rizado pelo corto rojo brillante usando una sencilla gabardina con capucha y flats negras. Tenía un gran estilo que da gusto ver y una ondita como de Brave.

I went shopping last weekend and saw this girl with short curly bright red hair wearing a simple hooded trench and ballet flats. She had a great style easy to the eye and a Brave mood.

Hay algo raro en todo el patronaje de Juun J. y es exactamente eso lo que hace a su trabajo tan perfecto, hermoso e increíble. Nada es lo que parece: ni las solapas, los dobladillo o los cierres son tan sencillos como uno piensa a primera vista.

You all know there is a goth inside me and that goth definitely LOVES Ann. This season as usual she brings long tops, transparencies, cuffed trousers and of course kick-ass combat boots.
